Some Alarms of The West Islip FD
Motley Crew!! Taking a break between multiple alarms during severe weather in Fall 1998
The following pics were from Superbowl Sunday morning, The call initially received at approximately 6:30 AM reported a signal 13 (structure fire) in a private residence. Shortly after activation, dispatch notifed that numerous calls were being received reporting occupants on the roof attempting to get down and possible occupants trapped within. 3-17-33 (Deputy Chief Iwasiuk) being first to arrive transmitted a signal 35 (working fire). The house, a 3 floor wood frame, had heavy fire on two floors and was free venting out the rear of the house on the exposure 3-4 corner threatening two 100lb propane cylinders near that location. An aggressive interior attack began while a protection line was put in place to protect the cylinders. All residents had been removed with the help of neighbors using portable ladders and the injured removed to Good Samaritan Hospital via West Islip Rescue. 3-17-6 was the first due engine for this alarm
Fire venting out area with limited interior access.
Lt. Delgado seen here discussing operation with 3-17-32 (Deputy Chief Epp) and Capt. Harvey (right). The dormered area of the house seen burning in background was only accessible via a spiral metal staircase located at the seat of the fire.
Roof team exiting roof
The roof team here is exiting roof via a portable ladder as fire in the the dormered area burns through the roof. The fire extended quickly due to a very heavy fireload inside the residence. Access to some roof area was limited do to large solar panels.
Fast team sizing up fire scene
Above, the F.A.S.T. company (Rapid Intervention Team) from the Bay Shore Fire Department does a sizeup of the fire while interior attack is underway and fire freevents from the exposure 1-4 side of the building. The small portable ladder against the tree in foregroud was used by neighbors to rescue occupants.
Dormered area completely burned away.
The photo above shows remains of the dormered area from exposure 1-4 view. House received very exstensive fire damage to the third floor as well as heavy fire damage to the first floor exposure 4 side. At top left of picture are the solar panels still in place.
On a lighter note
The following picture is from a January 9th signal 13 reporting smoke in the house. Upon arrival a light smoke condition was found. No visible fire. 3-17-6 was first due for this alarm. Situation investigated and taken care of.....
