Mohawk Engine Company #5 West Islip Fire Department The Apparatus of Company 5
3-17-5 is a 2002 Quint. It is built on a custom chassis and was built to better fit the needs of the community during the daytime hours, when generally, the manpower is at its lightest condition. A "Quint" generally means that it has capabilities of operating as both an Engine or a Ladder. 3-17-5 is also equipped with extrication equipment. It has a portable generator with a Hurst combination spreader/cutter, and airbags to help free a victim from an automible accident. It also serves as the primary response vehicle for Mohawk, on all mutual aids, as it is set up for "Rapid Intervention Team" or FAST capabilities. The cab of 3-17-5 itself is a 10-man cab.
3-17-6 is a 1997 Lance 1500 GPM top mount pumper. This engine is the primary second due engine for headquarters. This unit is equipped with a 750 gallon booster tank and 50 gallon foam tank and integrated foam system. This unit has a fully enclosed 10 man crew cab. .
3-17-7 is a 2004 Lance 1500 GPM side-mount pumper. This engine alternates with 3-17-5 as the primary response vehicle for alarms in West Islip for Mohawk Engine Company. It is equipped with "TAK-4" independent front suspension making negotiatiing turns a bit easier. It is also equipped with multiple state of the art tools useful in fire suppression techniques, and has a combintaion cutter/spreader like 3-17-5.
