Union Hook and Ladder and Heavy Rescue Company - H&L Today
The job of Hook and Ladder is to perform Search and Rescue operations, to perform Ventilation and extrication of injured persons from motor vehicle accidents. All firefighters must be certified in basic firefighting as outlined by the State of New York.
There are several other courses covering a wide variety of subjects that can be taken to expand and enhance ones knowledge of firefighting. Some of which become mandatory if you have the motivation to become a Line Officer. Just recently, New York State passed legislation making it possible to receive college credits for a number of the firematic courses.
Today the Truck Company operates with 2 pieces of equipment, 3-17-4 which is a 1991 Sutphen 95' foot center mount tower ladder and 3-17-3, a 2001 KME Heavy Rescue truck.
The Company currently has a roster of 40 members who live throughout the West Islip Fire District. These men and women have decided to give up their spare time and energy to help safeguard the lives and property of the Citizens of the Community. Often selflessly putting their lives on the line for total strangers.
