The West Islip Fire Department was started in 1951 with 2 Engine Company's, Engine Company #1 and Engine Company #2. Later in 1958 the 2 Company's merged to become Vanguard Engine Company. Vanguard is stationed out of the West Islip Fire Department's station one located at 127 Watts Place. We currently have 2 engines, 3-17-1 a 1989 Duplex Emergency One 1500 GPM Engine, and 3-17-2 a 1994 Pierce Lance 1500 GPM Engine with a Hurst Tool. Vanguard currently has 38 members.

3-17-1
3-17-1 is a 1989 Duplex Emergency One 1500 GPM Enginewith a 10 man cab and a top mounted pump. It carries 8 Scott 4.5 packs, 1000 feet of 5" hose, 800 feet of 3" hose, and 8 hand lines. It also has various forcible entry tools as well as a partner saw. All of the Department's trucks carry a first aid bag and O2.

3-17-2
3-17-2 is a 1994 Pierce Lance1500 GPM Engine that also has a 10 man cab and a top mounted pump.This engine carries 7 Scott 4.5 packs,1000 feet of 5" hose, 800 feet of 3" hose, and 7 hand lines. What's different about this engine is that as well as fire fighting equipment it also carries a Hurst Tool for Vehicle extrication.It's Hydro generator powers the tool and also large scene lights at the middle and rear of the engine.
